Unlocking organisational success: Key takeaways from the first FlameFront Masterclass

Thought leadership isn’t just about sharing ideas; it’s about creating spaces where those ideas ignite real change. Embracing this mindset, Firewood hosted our first FlameFront Masterclass last week where we explored project, programme and portfolio management (P3M) capability with industry expert, Tony Seigel. The session was a huge success, sparking fresh thinking and marking the beginning of an exciting new era of capability, competency and community building for Firewood.

Why P3M capability is a game-changer

The critical role P3M capability plays in driving organisational success was a key theme of the masterclass. Tony shared practical, thought-provoking insights into how organisations can strengthen their P3M capability to create a lasting impact that enables effective decision-making at every level. Here are some of the key takeaways from the session:

1. P3M capability is non-negotiable

Success isn’t just about ideas, it’s about executing them well. Every organisation’s goal, whether strategic, operational or transformative is relies on projects and programmes. Building strong P3M Capability isn’t optional; it’s essential.

2. Project management is a profession, recognise it

Although project management is growing, many organisations still don’t recognise it as a formal profession. Tony emphasised the importance of investing in professional project development, establishing clear structures and roles, and building leadership to support P3M professionals. You’ve got to formally recognise project management to stay ahead.

3. Build a capability framework that works

A well-defined framework is essential for long-term success. Tony shared a roadmap for strengthening P3M capability:

  • Assess where you stand: conduct a baseline assessment using self-assessment, manager feedback, and external validation.

  • Define roles and competencies: set clear expectations and development pathways.

  • Consider formal accreditation: raise the credibility of your project professionals.

4. Get leadership on board

Without support from senior leadership, efforts to build capability lose momentum. That’s why it’s crucial to communicate the value of P3M clearly, influence decision-makers, and help them see P3M as a key driver of strategic success.

Watch the highlights and stay ahead

A huge thank you to Tony Seigel, for leading such an insightful session, and to everyone who joined.
