Firewood delivers capability improvement and delivery expertise to Nuclear Waste Services
Back in 2021, Firewood was appointed by Low Level Waste Repository Limited (LLWR) to help them improve their project, programme and portfolio management (P3M) capability for two years plus extension. This was shortly followed by a partnership with multinational engineering consultancy, Mott MacDonald, to provide project, programme and portfolio management services on a wide range of initiatives at LLWR.
Since then, LLWR has joined Radioactive Waste Management and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority’s Integrated Waste Management programme to create Nuclear Waste Services (NWS). NWS are an organisation responsible for safe and secure management of the UK's nuclear waste and the delivery of alternative waste management approaches for the nuclear industry. Accordingly, the organisation’s project, programme and portfolio landscape is constantly evolving, which poses new challenges to the Firewood team who are dedicated to finding innovative solutions to these issues.
What has been achieved so far?
The engagement has allowed NWS to draw upon Firewood’s expertise, subject matter experts and tools to grow and mature internal capability. So far, Firewood has:
delivered maturity assessments to identify strengths and weaknesses in capability;
provided advisory and hands-on support with the development of enterprise level frameworks and guidance; and
helped define the overall approach to assuring strategic programmes.
Firewood has also supported Mott MacDonald’s work on change initiatives that range from minor asset care tasks to IT change projects and major construction programmes that span many years.
What is planned?
Firewood is now planning to integrate improvements into the wider business environment to enhance operational efficiency, which will require large-scale harmonisation and stakeholder management efforts across NWS. Firewood remains committed to maintaining and strengthening its partnership with NWS to ensure benefits are delivered to the organisation.
